My cat is pulling out her hair?

It's mostly the hair on her back and near her tail. Her skin isn't red or scaly and she doesn't have fleas, I have checked. We have two other cats, one is her sister, and they are fine. It's really weird to see her jus reach to her back grab a mouth full of hair and just rip it out. She then just spits it all out and goes on her way. She had some dental surgery about 3 months ago, but all of the stress from that should be past by now. She's usually a beautiful cat, all oranges and black and creams, but now she has a big drab saddle area. She is usually also shaved about twice a year because they get hairballs, but we haven't gotten her done because of the surgery. Maybe having more hair than she normally does is bothering her? Her diet hasn't changed for over 5 years so that shouldn't be a problem. Does anybody have an idea?

Have there been any changes in your household lately? Cats are creatures of habit and hate change or disruption of their routine. This can cause stress and hair pulling among other things. I had a cat that was so sensitive if we moved the furniture he would stress and have a bout with urinary problems. This is definitely a question for your vet.

I have a cat who does this, it could be a couple diffrent things. Allergies can cause them to do this. There may not be any physical evidence of allergic reactions but it could cause them to pull out thier hair. The other is a nervous condition. This is what my cat had. She was very neurotic and would pull her hair out when she was stressed, the vet gave her a shot of steriods and it cleared up. Take her to the vet treatment is pretty easy for both issues.. Good luck with your kitty...

It could be a number of things, and it's hard to figure out what's stressing a cat out. The cat may be over the dental surgery, but there's a thousand other things that could be stressing her out....new litter, someone leaving/moving out, etc. Call your vet and see if anything can be done about this. Good luck.

Hi there.

First, it's not a good idea to shave a cat, they have hair there for a reason, and if hair balls is a problem, get hair ball remedy, it's a cream that you can let them lick off your fingers.

Cats can do this for different reasons, ticks, sometimes fleas arn't visable, skin infections, and even some of those arn't visable, allergies, there are so many different possibilities, but i would reccomend beinging her to a vet. only they can tell you for sure and keep her totally healthy.

The saddle area is the problem. A cat's coat is much like a lawn in that if you leave it covered for too long it becomes drab. After riding her you should immediately take the saddle off and dry her.

Sorry to hear that! It is always a good idea to have your cat checked by the vet but this sounds very much like self-mutilation. Cats do it, parrots do it too. One of my cats did it after we moved house. It is usually the sensitive cats who do this and it is really hard to get them to stop it. Create a very safe and stable environment for your cat and put her on Bachflower Rescue Remedy (2-4 drops in the drinking water). If the situation does not improve in a few weeks, you should discuss with your vet to put her on Prozac for cats. It works well and it usually helps within weeks.
